Sustainable Solutions

    Sustainable Solutions

As awareness regarding global and regional sustainability challenges increased, ICL developed a two-legged approach. On the one hand, operational innovation focused on reducing negative impacts - promoting energy, material and carbon efficiency, pollution control, risk reduction, and supply chain impact. In parallel, ICL’s RD&I is looking at the SDGs as guiding principles for further development. There has been a growing focus on the introduction of solutions that increase the global positive impact of ICL’s business - through its products, existing and new. \

Progress has been made on both fronts. ICL is implementing industry 4.0, using AI, drones and other new technologies to improve operational performance. The company has significantly reduced its air emissions and carbon footprint over the last few years. It is also developing new products that help with reducing potential hazards and environmental impact when working with Bromine (one of ICL’s main resource materials) such as BromoQuel™.

The SDGs serve as guiding principles in ICL’s quest for new products. This is especially true for SDG 2 – Zero Hunger. ICL has a part to play in ensuring global Food Security, from growing food with advanced fertilizers through alternative proteins and products made for food preservation.  Such solutions include controlled release and other high performance fertilizers, integration with sophisticated irrigation technology and precision agriculture. A good example is Polysulphate, an organic high-quality fertilizer with low environmental footprint, where ICL is currently the only global producer.

    2.4
By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
    14.1
By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.

This systematic approach is not unique to fertilizers. ICL is seeking to support and develop its products for new clean, environmentally friendly initiatives, such as the unique chemistry required for grid-scale renewable energy storage and various circular economy solutions that are being explored by leveraging global partnerships.

    7.2
By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

ICL’s products are also incorporated into the food, pharma and personal care industries. For Example, ICL has recently developed a new product line for the personal care industry. The CareMag D is a new product line – a deodorant compound, based on magnesium from Dead Sea salt. It is natural, non-toxic and hypoallergenic raw material used for deodorants and baby skin care.

Significant effort is also being made to improve every aspect of ICL’s products’ life cycles, from environmental planning during the product development phase, through efficient logistics, and  through training and support of business partners and end users. These include local distributors, farmers, suppliers and others that may have significant impact on products’ environmental impact and performance.

ICL has also developed SAFR®, a systematic framework for assessment of flame retardants for clients using its fire retardants. SAFR® enables clients to have a scientific based approach when choosing between various products.
