Pooled Resources Turn Overgrown Eyesore Into Fun and Educational Memorial

The community of Guisborough in east Cleveland, and local employer ICL Boulby have come together to transform a dilapidated spot at a local school. A pupil at Chaloner Primary school in Guisborough died as a result of a degenerative condition. His friends and classmates wanted a derelict courtyard in the centre of the building to be transformed in his memory. But they wanted it to be a lively place for them all to enjoy. The entire community helped in the transformation. One of the final touches was to improve the pond area and ensure it was safe for the youngsters. ICL Boulby sent workers, offering expertise and materials, to remove and  replace the old pond.

The area is more than just a pleasant place for children to come and take time out, it has an educational purpose as well. It is designed to be a resource to help deliver lessons in science and recycling. Read more…

The Runswick Bay Rescue Boat charity

ICL Boulby mine is not open to the public, but ICL does offer local community groups a unique way to raise money by donating to “Auction of Promise”. ICL Boulby  provides a group of five people an opportunity of the lifetime to visit the company’s underground operation.

The visit to Europe’s second deepest mine at Boulby proved a popular auction lot during the annual fundraising weekend for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat. When the bidding was completed nearly £300 had been raised for the independent charity that works in close cooperation with the RNLI and HM Coastguard.
