GoalsPerformanceThe Next Steps
GHG Emissions45% reduction of Global Scope 1+2+3 GHG emissions by 2030, compared to the year 2008; 3% YOY (year-on-year) reduction from 2019 and onwards.By 2019, ICL’s Global GHG emissions have been reduced by 24% compared with 2008 base year emissions. This constitutes 53% of our planned decrease by 2030. Specifically in 2019, emissions were reduced by 4% in 2019 compared to 2018 (annual target achieved). The reduction in 2019 mostly resulted from a decrease in Scope 2 in ICL Europe sites, among else- due to the transition of several ICL sites to 100% renewable electricity.Continue reductions, mainly through further increasing renewable energy usage, and through the planned termination of Oil Shale combustion in ICL Rotem in 2021 and replacement with NG.
Air Emissions15% reduction of Global NOx emissions from point sources, by 2022 compared to the year 2016; 35% reduction of Global SOx emissions from point sources, by 2020 compared to the year 2016; 40% reduction of ICL Israel Ammonia (NH3) emissions from point sources, by 2020 compared to the year 2016.NOx emissions were reduced by 5% in 2019 VS 2018, and by 4% VS 2016 (27% of the target). The reduction was mostly caused due to the installation of a new highly efficient boiler, in the new Sdom power plant. 2019 was the plant’s first full year of operation. SOx emissions were reduced by 26% VS 2018, and by 51% VS 2016 (target fully achieved). The reduction was mostly to the installation of a new, advanced and improved catalyst in both of the ICL Rotem sulphuric acid production plants (Plant 10 in 2018, Plant 11 in 2019). NH3 emissions in Israel were reduced by 45% VS 2018, and by 63% VS 2016 (target fully achieved). The reduction was partially due the Implementation of New Ammonia treatment technology in the Ammonium Nitrate facility stack, but also due to prolonged shut- down of the Nitrous Acid production facility in ICL Haifa F&C.2021: Implemente New NOx (and N2O) treatment technology in Nitrous Acid facility stack, Haifa F&C. 2021: Eliminate Oil Shale combustion in ICL Rotem, switching to NG.
Renewable EnergyAnnually increase renewable energy consumption by 20% (year-on-year), increasingly replacing fossil-fuel based energy. In 2019, several ICL sites in the Netherlands and Germany were transitioned to purchasing 100% renewable electricity; Overall global renewable energy usage increased in 2019 to 564K GJ (target achieved). 10% of the company’s global indirect energy consumption, and 2% of the overall energy consumption, was derived from renewable sources in 2019.In 2020, additional ICL sites in Spain will be converted to 100% renewable electricity. In parallel, start installing photovoltaic (solar energy) electricity production capacity in available and appropriate areas within the operational boundaries of ICL sites. First pilot in ICL Periclase, Israel, now in planning and designated for operation in 2021.
Energy efficiencyMake natural gas (NG) the main fuel for ICL’s energy intensive sites. Achieve $8 million savings in energy costs in 2020 compared with 2018; Achieve a year-by-year improvement in over 50% of all product-based intensity KPI's (MWh per tonne product).90% of the fuel consumed by ICL’s Global facilities in 2019 was derived of NG; By the end of 2018, 95% (40/42) of ICL Israel's main energy-consuming installations were converted to NG; 28 of ICL’s largest global production sites implemented the energy savings methodology (ACE); The specific savings in 2019 were approx. $12 million compared to 2018; In 2019, 34 of 63 products (53%) showed annual average improvement in energy intensity, therefore achieving the annual target.During 2020, implement the ACE energy savings methodology in 2 additional ICL sites for the first time. Other sites will be revisited to refresh local ACE energy efficiency teams and procedures, and to identify new energy efficiency opportunities. 2021: Eliminate Oil Shale combustion in ICL Rotem, switching to NG.
Circular EconomyAnnually increasing by 30% (year-on-year), the total mass of waste streams re-used as part of circular economy initiatives.ICL has now started to measure all existing global projects- progress will be detailed in next year’s report.Continue to expand current circular economy initiatives, and actively search for new internal and external collaborations to increase waste reusage.
